SEXTON
Herb Marsh
Herb Marsh was born into the Second Congregational Church of Cohasset upon his birth in
1960. He was baptized by Reverand Frank Chatterton (Ann Pompeo’s father) and regularly
attended Sunday School where he eagerly served as an Acolyte, lighting the alter candles, and a
proud flag bearer during Sunday morning’s ‘Flag Procession’.
One of Herb’s fondest memories is of a special ‘Field Trip’ led by his Sunday School teacher,
Steve Bobo, to the top of the church steeple … where Herbie and the other children were awed
by the beautiful views of Little Harbor and Sandy Beach!* Herb also warmly remembers his
sister, Alice’s, wedding at Second Congregational Church and his reading of the Bible verse,
“Love is Patient, Love is Kind”.
As a steadfast member of Second Congregational Church Herb has continuously served on either the Trustees or the Board of Deacons for the past 30 years. After working for the Cohasset
Department of Public Works for 39 years Herb retired in 2024 and became the beloved sexton of
his lifelong spiritual home. Needless to say, the congregation is blessed to have him.
*As an avid historian, Herb says the ‘Field Trip’ to the top of the church steeple reminded him of
sexton Robert Newman who is immortalized in the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow for
hanging two lanterns in Boston’s Old North Church on April 18, 1775.
